white tea, from 200-300 years old Tea trees
Menghai – 勐海, Yunnan Province, China
Yue Guang Bai (月光白, moonlight white) is a special white tea from the Menghai area in Yunnan Province.
The fresh, dry leaves have a mesmerising fragrance of tropical fruits and flowers. When infused, the smell deepens and a new layer of grapes and honey appears. This smooth sweetness characterises the tea’s taste profile with slight notes of fresh thyme.
Due to its chaqi, the tea has great warming and vitalising effect on the body. Its silky aftertaste is sweet and long-lasting.
The appearance is the first thing one must notice – each leaf has a shining ‘white’ side while the other side is deep purple or red. This duality has its cause in the process it is made with. After plucking and withering the leaves, they are dried under the light of the Full Moon.
The 360 years old tea-garden was severely damaged in 1955: the branches were cut back in order to make plucking easier. For a few years now the garden has a new owner who is trying to restore the farm into its natural state.
