white tea, from 200-300 years old Tea trees
Menghai – 勐海, Yunnan Province, China
Yue Guang Bai (月光白, moonlight white) is a special white tea from the Menghai area in Yunnan Province.
It has the pure flavour and smooth, sweet creaminess of a late harvest tea and fills the mouth with the richness of freshly picked apple.
The appearance is the first thing one must notice – each leaf has a fascinating ‘white’ side while the other side is purple or red. This duality is because of character traits of the tea plant varietal that is used to make this tea – Camellia taliensis (大理茶).
The 360 years old tea-garden was severly damaged in 1955: the branches were cut back in order to make plucking easier. For a few years now the garden has a new owner who is trying to restore the farm into its natural state.
